Carman had spent the autumn months of 2017 in our stone yard, creating a stunning sculpture of Ireland's famous thoroughbred stallion, Invincible Spirit. Although Invincible Spirit has retired from racing, the Duke of York stakes winner has become one of our country's leading studs with a long list of notable progenies. Beginning with a huge block of Kilkenny Limestone from McKeon, Carman spent hours painstakingly chipping away at the block to reveal the beautiful stallion hidden within. At the end of the process, Carman had conjured a breath-taking sculpture of the equine winner which was commissioned by the Irish National Stud.
It was fascinating for us to see master sculptor, Simon at work, his talents on display for all as he worked his magic on the large slab of limestone, revealing day by day a little more of the secret stallion hidden away inside it. Our whole team felt privileged to be able to watch art in action right under our noses.
Simon Carman is a local art legend - he grew up in Dublin and follows in the footsteps of his mother, renowned sculptress, Cathy Carman. After studying for a foundation at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin, Simon went on to attend the Glasgow School of Art where he achieved a BA Hon. in Sculpture. He has exhibited both in Ireland and on the international stage and his works feature in several private collections.
